Steel City Brass event to celebrate 135 years of Sheffield Citadel Band of the Salvation Army.

The Sheffield Citadel Band of the Salvation Army are celebrating an incredible 135 years in service by holding an event aimed at thanking the local community and previous members for their support.
The concert, called Steel City Brass, will take place on Saturday November the 19 at 7pm and will feature contemporary and traditional music to celebrate the heritage of the band and the City.
The Citadel Band will be joined by the Unite the Union band and vocalist Stephanie Lamplough.
Unite the Union Brass Band is one of the most successful bands in Sheffield and South Yorkshire. The Band was formed in 1900 and over the years has performed under several different names, including Sheffield Recreation Band, Stocksbridge Band, and City of Sheffield Band. They are famous for appearing in the blockbuster ‘The Full Monty’
Sheffield Citadel Band of the Salvation Army Band Master Keith Wileman said:
“It’s a fantastic way for us to celebrate in the heart of the community we serve and having the Unite the Union band join us will really add to the variety of music as well as sense of community on the night. Music is an important part of how The Salvation Army celebrates and a 135 anniversary is certainly a fantastic opportunity to do so. We will also be welcoming many former band members joining us at the event.”

Local community are invited to join in Salvation Army band 135 year celebration
A reunion festival is being held this weekend (24th and 25th of September) to celebrate 135 years of the Salvation Army Sheffield Citadel Band.
Part of a calendar of special events being held this year to celebrate 135 years of music ministry in Sheffield, the local community are invited to come along this weekend to mark this significant milestone and share in a time of fellowship and music.
From humble beginnings making music using one large bell and an old drum, the band quickly became the highly regarded and accomplished music group that it is today. Members of the community are encouraged to come along and find out more about the rich history of the band within the city of Sheffield. Visitors and former band members from as far afield as Northern Ireland and Holland are expected to join in the celebrations.
On Sunday, the celebrations will be led by Lt Col Trevor Davis, notable Salvation Army composer. Lt Col Davis said: “I am very much looking forward to visiting Sheffield next weekend and meeting up with many colleagues and friends at the reunion weekend”.
Sheffield Citadel Bandmaster, Keith Wileman said: “Our band has a long history within the city and we’re looking forward to celebrating our 135th Anniversary by reuniting past and present members of the band together in a weekend of music, fellowship and memories. We really hope that people who have been connected with our band and our church in the past will come and share in this special weekend with us”.
The festival commences with an evening event this Saturday at 7pm. The celebrations will continue on Sunday during worship at 10.30am and 5.30pm. All events are free of charge and will be held at the Sheffield Citadel Corps, 12, Psalter Lane, Sheffield, S11

Internationally renowned musician helps Sheffield Citadel Band celebrate 135 years in the city
This year The Salvation Army’s Sheffield Citadel Band is celebrating 135 years in the city and is holding a number of events to mark the occasion including a festival performance led by internationally renowned American musician William Himes on Saturday 14th May 2016.
United voices choir, made up of more than 100 vocalists from across Yorkshire, will be singing William’s compositions, and the Citadel’s band will also be playing his music.
Keith Wileman, Sheffield Citadel Bandmaster, said: “We are grateful for all the support we’ve received over the last 135 years from the people of Sheffield and our celebrations this year are a great opportunity to show our appreciation.
“We’re honoured that William Himes is joining us to help celebrate our 135th birthday. It’s a privilege for our band and songsters to be performing his music, and we’re excited that local people in Sheffield will have the opportunity to witness a performance led by such a gifted musician. It will be a wonderful evening of music and we’re keen to extend a warm welcome to the community and beyond.”
Sheffield Citadel, on Psalter Lane is a busy church and community centre which has been supporting local people for 135 years.

Black Dyke Trombone Quartet
Last week, the Black Dyke Trombone Quartet presented an evening of music at The Citadel, as part of our 135 celebrations. Here are some photos from the evening.

Sheffield Citadel Band’s 135th Anniversary celebrations got off to a magnificent start with their Young Stars in Concert with SCB event; attended by a capacity congregation and viewed online by an additional audience of several hundred people, it was a great launch to a year of celebrations marking this milestone in the Band’s history.
The Band had invited two of the Salvation Army’s most talented young musicians to share the stage for the evening: Isobel Daws, trombone and Charlie Green, vocal. Expectations were high & anticipation was great as the congregation gathered at The Citadel but they were certainly not disappointed.
After a rousing start with Leslie Condon’s fitting March ‘Celebration’, followed by Stephen Ponsford’s reflective welsh melody ‘Suo Guan’, Bandmaster Keith Wileman welcomed the congregation to the first of the Band’s many celebrations for 2016, before introducing the guest soloists for the evening: 16 year old Isobel, from Regent Hall, has been studying trombone at The Purcell School of Music for several years and has been a finalist in the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year competition. Charlie Green, 18, began performing at the age of 3, has sung to dignitaries across the globe and came to the world’s attention when he appeared on television in 2008.
The programme continued with the Band’s playing of ‘Call of the Gospel’ which served as a reminder that Sheffield Citadel Band has been taking the gospel to the people of Sheffield and further afield for 135 years, something which the Band prays will continue long into the future.
Next came the turn of the soloists with Charlie taking the first spot and bringing three secular songs: ‘Feeling Good’, ‘The Rose’ and ‘Stars’ from ‘Les Miserables’. Charlie clearly loves singing and joy shone through on his face as he delivered not just the words and notes, but a story. He introduced his own songs and gave helpful & sometimes humorous insights into why he had chosen to sing the particular songs, as well as their impact upon him as a young singer.
Isobel followed with her interpretation of the modern and upbeat piece ‘Brasilia’, written by Robin Dewhurst. This challenging piece of music tests both a band and the soloist with its Latin American rhythm & harmonies but Isobel made it seem simple as she enthralled the congregation with her accomplished playing, obviously the result of great talent as well as many hours of dedicated practice.
Sheffield Citadel Band brought the first half of the programme to its conclusion with the presentation of William Himes’ classic selection ‘The Chief Musician’, a work which was revolutionary at its inception with its use of choric speaking and singing within a brass band piece of music. The message to the congregation in the central movement was clear, ‘I bring thee all’.
Kevin Larsson’s lively ‘Fill the World With Glory’ opened the second half of the festival as the congregation made their way back to their seats to the echoes of “We’re going to fill fill fill the world with glory, we’re going to smile smile smile and not frown”, hopefully symbolic of what was still to come!
In her final solo spot Isobel played the classic trombone solo, ‘The Eternal Quest’ written by Ray Steadman Allen. This is a solo known well within the Salvation Army world and one which is recognised as a challenge for the soloist. It features the tune “Jesus is looking for thee” as the music portrays the story of the man who, after stumbling through life, comes to Calvary. Isobel’s rendition showed both her technical capability and her controlled playing, and was deservedly received with great applause.
Charlie then presented three religious songs. First, with band accompaniment, was an up-tempo version of ‘Now I Belong to Jesus’, a song which had the congregation smiling in their seats as Charlie’s relaxed style gave the words fresh meaning. This was clearly a young man who thrives on music & who has a faith which he loves to share with others. His enthusiasm and Christianity was tangible as he then brought his testimony in song with his own arrangement of ‘What a friend we have in Jesus’, an item which was received with appreciative silence. Finally Charlie presented ‘You Raise Me Up’, a song which has become popular as both a sacred and secular song and has had an impact upon many people.
As the programme moved into a more reflective mood, SCB played a piece of music written by former Sheffield Citadel Bandmaster, Jim Wright, entitled ‘Lost in Thee’. This beautiful piece of music is based around the song “Sweet will of God, still fold me closer”
Isobel and Charlie then joined together for a beautiful joint rendition of ‘The Prayer’, with Isobel taking her part of the duet on the trombone whilst Charlie sang in English and Italian. This was truly an item which challenged and blessed all those present.
Bandsman Alistair Mann presented a short scripture reading & message, reminding everyone of the wonder of creation and how significant we are amongst God’s creation because we are crowned with glory and honour, before Isobel brought the time of reflection to an end with her final contribution, the hymn tune ‘Bowes’. After her earlier playing of such complex and challenging music, her simple portrayal of this tune associated with the words “Jesus Loves me, This I know” brought a stillness to the evening. Her flawless playing and beautiful tone allowed the message of those words to be clearly portrayed into the hearts of those listening.
Sheffield Citadel Band brought the evening to a conclusion with the playing of their signature march ‘Sheffield Citadel’, written by former Bandmaster Herbert Mountain, sending everyone home with the words associated with the march, ringing in their minds “I’ll stand for Christ, for Christ Alone”, a reminder of the Band’s motto for the year: “SCB 135, Standing for Christ.”

Two up-and-coming young music stars will headline a concert kicking off year-long 135th anniversary celebrations for one of Sheffield’s oldest bands on 27 February 2016.
Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Charlie Green (vocal), 18, and BBC Young Musician of The Year (brass category) finalist Isobel Daws (trombone), 16, will be performing at one of a series of events that will celebrate Sheffield Citadel Salvation Army Band’s anniversary.
The band is comprised of volunteer musicians who use their musical talents to provide hope and comfort to people at the heart of the community and to share the Christian message. Members are drawn from a range of professions, among them are teachers, draughtsmen, business owners, head teachers, former steelworkers and students.
Bandmaster Keith Wileman said: ‘The Salvation Army recently celebrated 150 years of serving at the heart of the community and this year presents an opportunity for the band to celebrate its own ministry and heritage among people in Sheffield.
‘Throughout the band’s history the musicians have maintained their commitment of going to the community to bring hope – from monthly open-air meetings, to concerts around the city, to helping other charities fundraise, as well as visiting hospices and the children’s hospital to provide cheer and comfort to those staying there. The band provides so much more than music – its volunteer members are a source of support and friendship to many.
‘We are looking forward to the Young Stars in Concert event – both Charlie and Isobel are excellent musicians and we know the concert will be a fantastic evening of music, as well as a great way to start our anniversary celebrations.’
Over the next 12 months, a number of events will take place at The Salvation Army hall on Psalter Lane, including a visit from world-renowned Black Dyke Band and a reunion for musicians who were once a part of the band.
Keith said: ‘Our anniversary is a great opportunity for people to return to church or to attend for the first time and to share in celebrations with us in many different ways. We hope that there will be something that will appeal to everyone and promise a warm welcome to all who attend.’

Young Stars in Concert with SCB
We’ll be kicking off our 135th Anniversary year in style with our first special event of 2016 : Young Stars in Concert with Sheffield Citadel Band. Our special guests for the evening will be Isobel Daws, trombone and Charlie Green, vocal. These young people are both very accomplished musicians and we know that a a fantastic musical evening is in store.
Isobel Daws
Isobel Daws is 16 years old & she began to play the cornet at the age of 3 with tuition from Maisie Ringham Wiggins, MBE. Under Maisie’s direction Isobel moved to the trombone in September 2008. Six months later Isobel successfully auditioned for a place to study trombone at The Purcell School of Music. where she holds a scholarship under the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme and is now tutored by Rob Workman.
After an extensive audition process, Isobel was thrilled to be chosen as one of the five finalists in the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year 2014 Brass Category Final and in March 2014 she received a Gold Award from the ABRSM for obtaining one of the highest marks in her Grade 8 exam.
Isobel has been a member of The National Youth Brass Band, National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain and was a member of The National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain for four years, three of which she received full scholarships from the Leverhulme Trust for distinction in musicianship and instrumental excellence. In 2015 Isobel was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and was thrilled to play at the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
Charlie Green
Charlie Green’s baptism into the world of entertainment began at the age of 3 when he entertained passengers on board a cruise ship with a rendering of the classic ‘New York, New York’. In 2005, at the age of 8, Charlie was invited by the ‘Not Forgotten Association for Ex-Servicemen’ to perform at their annual concert at St James’ Palace, the highlight of his day being an introduction to HRH Princess Anne.
Charlie came to the world’s attention in 2008 when he sang on the popular TV show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. Simon Cowell said “Charlie you are a little star, I really, really like you.”
Charlie is an active member of the Droitwich Spa Salvation Army where he is a member of the Band and also Deputy Songster Leader. Charlie is always eager to share his Christian faith with others and one of the highlights for him in 2015 was performing at London’s O2 Arena at the ‘Boundless Congress’ celebrating The Salvation Army’s 150th Anniversary.
On the 27th February, Isobel’s solos will include “The Eternal Quest” and “Brasilia” and amongst Charlie’s numbers will feature “Feeling Good” and “You Raise Me Up”.
